‘Pelican’ is slightly underwhelming, for Bonobo standards anyway. Granted, it’s nicely textured; there’s a bunch of never-ending tweaks and short synth bursts but there ain’t much else happening. It’s received hype, but only because it’s Bonobo and I’m almost positive that without the acclaim, ‘Pelican’ would have been forgotten in the seemingly endless pool of Soundcloud anti-climaxes. Not that I’m not a fan of this, mind. Just, comparing this to Bonobo’s previous work would be wrong. Think about it this way: if this was the first tune you heard from an artist, would you go back for more?
