Where: The Fez Club, Sheffield
Who: DJ Zinc & My Nu Leng
Promoters: Cheese On Bread, Naughty Sounds
I’ve heard a great deal about The Fez club in Sheffield so I thought I’d take a short trip from Manchester to see what the fuss is about. Local promoters Cheese On Bread kindly took me under their wing with Rinse icon DJ Zinc and Black Butter protégés My Nu Leng providing the evening’s entertainment.
Resident Rev. Austin taunted the crowd with the slickest of crossovers hopping in and out of genres with ease. At this point, with the floor filling to capacity, revellers were met by a plethora of crowd-pleasers and with DJ Zinc appearing in the midst it felt as though they were hyped to just the right level.
People often blurt out that being a DJ is easy stuff. With a bit of time and practice, it’s not too difficult to be a good DJ, but it requires exceptional ability to be great. You find yourself having to read the crowd, read the night and find the right tune for that point. For me, DJ Zinc can pull all that off whilst making it look as though he’s just messing about at home. He kept the level of intensity and his foray into jungle was an absolute master class of technique.
Known for their bass-heavy tendencies, My Nu Leng was up next. Even the best of DJ’s will struggle to follow Zinc so it felt as though their set was a little underwhelming. That being said, dropping Joy O & Boddika’s – ‘More Maim’ was a particular highlight of the entire night.
Teaming up with Naughty Sounds, Cheese On Bread know how to put on a good night. Well organised, attracting the right crowd and booking artists that work well on a line up. I’d definitely recommend checking out any of their future events.
